US Navy Testing Of The Kirby Morgan® KM-37 Deep Sea Diving Helmet Contaminated Water Diving System
The Navy Experimental Diving Unit recently evaluated the KM-37 helmet with the Quad Exhaust system for contaminated water use. The KM-37 helmet mated with a Viking Dry Suite is intended to replace the current inventory of aging MK-21 helmets which have been in service for two decades. Testing was done using a harmless fluorescein dye in the test tank. The dye is commonly used in the medical industry and shows up brightly under a black light which will reveal even the slightest intrusion.
In all 66 manned dives were completed at three different depths ranging from the surface, 30’ and 60 FSW in the NEDU ocean simulation facility. Inspection after the dives showed zero water intrusion in all positions.
The Quad Valve System proved to be far superior to the old latex double exhaust which was previously used on the MK-21 helmet as the standard contaminated water exhaust configuration which has been in use for over 25 years.
The new Quad Exhaust Systems are available for all SuperLight® and KM helmets and the Tri-Exhaust is available for the KMB®-18/28 BandMasks®. For more information contact your KMDSI dealer.
Congratulations to the US Army. The U.S. Army is replacing their inventory of SL-17B helmets with the new SL-17K. They are also adding the EXO®-BR MS and the Manifold Block to their inventory. We at Kirby Morgan® Dive Systems look forward to continuing our ongoing service to the Army. Army personnel having technical questions can contact Dive Lab. The Operations/Maintenance Manuals for both the SL-17K and The EXO®-BR can be found for downloading here.
